Speak up for Immigration Reform: Against Law's Like Arizona's New Law and For Immigration Reforms That Will Work for Immigrant Women

March on May 1st

reformimmigrationforamerica.org/blog/march-index/

Get Your Organization to Sign on to the Attached Letter Urging Support for Immigration Reforms Immigrant Women and their Children Need --

Deadline extended to May 2nd at 5:00 p.m.

We are writing to seek your support in joining us in support of the attached sign-on letter urging members of Congress to support comprehensive immigration reform and changes in immigration enforcement policies that are crucial to the safety and well being of immigrant women, their children and our communities. This sign-on letter highlights the particular needs of immigrant women and children in the context of immigration reform legislation and Congressional oversight efforts with regard to the effects of current immigration policies and practices on immigrant women and children. It sets forth a set of principles that will assist the Congress in developing immigration and enforcement policy to help redress the too-often invisible circumstances in which many immigrant women live.

If your organization will sign on to the attached letter, please contact Alejandro Navarro at Legal Momentum, iwp@legalmomentum.org or (202) 326-0044.

May 1 March: On May 1st, people across America will be joining marches in their communities calling upon Congress and the Obama Administration to act now to fix our broken immigration system. Every day that our government doesn’t pass immigration reform, the fabric of America is unraveled and the American dream is deferred. The immigrant women immigrant women who care for our children, nurse our elderly, clean our offices and homes, and work in the farm and factories that feed and clothe our nation are forced to continue living in the shadows.

This past week Arizona passed a new immigration law. This new Arizona Anti Immigrant law is a dramatic example of the federal government's failure to take the lead on immigration. Increased immigration enforcement efforts like those required by the Arizona law and those created by the Obama Administration's expansion of 287(g) agreements authorizing local police to enforce immigration law raises the danger and vulnerability of immigrant women and make the need for Comprehensive Immigration Reform all the more important. Every day these enforcement actions continue immigrant women become more and more vulnerable to crime victimization, crime perpetrators go free and our communities become more and more unsafe.

Thank you in advance for joining us in these important efforts!

29 Apr 2010 - 09:42Iranian Women's Rights Activists

Letter by Iranian Women's Rights Activists to Members of the United
Nation's Economic and Social Council

27 April 2010
Your Excellencies,
The news of the Iranian government's candidacy for membership in
ECOSOC's Commission on Status of Women (CSW) has disturbed women's
rights activists worldwide. According to the available information,
ECOSOC members will vote on Iran's candidacy for a vacant seat from the
Asia region on 28 and 29 April.

We, a group of gender-equality activists, believe that for the sake of
women's rights globally, an empty seat for the Asia group on CSW is much
preferable to Iran's membership. We are writing to alert you to the
highly negative ramifications of Iran's membership in this international
body.

In recent years, the Iranian government has not only refused to join the
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against
Women (CEDAW), but has actively opposed it. The Iranian government has
earned international condemnation as a gross violator of women's
rights. Discrimination against women is codified in its laws, as well as
in executive and cultural institutions, and Iran has consistently sought
to preserve gender inequality in all places, from the family unit to the
highest governmental bodies.

Iran's discriminatory laws demonstrate that the Islamic Republic does
not believe in gender equality: women lack the ability to choose their
husbands, have no independent right to education after marriage, no
right to divorce, no right to child custody, have no protection from
violent treatment in public spaces, are restricted by quotas for women's
admission at universities, and are arrested, beaten, and imprisoned for
peacefully seeking change of such laws.

While the Iranian women's rights movement has inspired equality
activists around the world, the Iranian government has no basic belief
in gender equality, and would bring those views to the leadership of
CSW. How would that support CSW's mission to remove gender
inequalities and promote and protect the status of women?

The Iranian government does not respect or implement the Beijing
Platform, and has done much to prevent the implementation of this
platform. After fifteen years of gains on this front worldwide, Iran
explicitly claims that the Beijing Platform has failed. In recent
years, the government has actively sought to justify paternalism and
gender-inequality under the guise of traditional values and cultural
relativism. Providing an international platform to such a government is
a serious threat to women's rights globally, and not just in Iran.

We, a group of gender-equality activists, caution you that Iran's
membership in CSW is a serious threat to the goals and mission of this
institution. The Iranian government will certainly use this opportunity
to curtail progress and the advancement of women.

We write this letter hoping that you will oppose Iran's membership. If
Iran's membership at CSW is inevitable, then we urge you to require its
government to make serious commitments to international conventions on
gender equality, particularly in implementing the Beijing Declaration
and Platform and becoming a party to CEDAW.

Respectfully

Pedofilia y poder sagrado
Pablo Richard

California

From Center for Judicial Excellence:

We need your support for AB 2475 right now! Assemblyman Jim Beall has introduced AB 2475 that eliminates quasi-judicial immunity for private sector court appointees (minors counsel, custody evaluators, special masters, therapists, etc). If this bill passes, then private sector court appointees will no longer be protected from being sued when they violate the law, rules of court, or professional standards.

Please fax, e-mail or call in your support for this legislation right away to both Assemblymembers listed below. If you are a member of an organization, a church, or any other group that supports family court reform, then please be sure to send your support on your organizational letterhead.

A hearing for this bill in the Assembly Judiciary Committee is set for next Tuesday, May 4th! It will likely start at 8am or 9am. Please plan to come to Sacramento to add your voice to those who demand justice for the court appointees who are flagrantly violating the law. Be sure to check your email again before then, as committee rescheduling is quite common, and we have no control over what the Judiciary Committee decides to do.

The cottage industry is already raising a ruckus about this bill, and we are being told that this bill doesn't have as much support as it does opposition. We are counting on you to prove them wrong. Please show our state lawmakers that there is broad statewide support for eliminating immunity for lawbreaking court appointees.

MAFO

2011 National Farmworker Conference
Call for Workshop Proposals

Dear Colleagues;

MAFO, a National Partnership of Rural and Farmworker Organizations, provides a national forum to address farmworker and rural Latino communities. For over 39 years, the mission of MAFO has been to build healthy communities of rural Latinos. We recognize their assets, families’ needs and work to build self-sufficiency by advocating, training and strengthening rural Latinos, i.e. farmworkers, immigrants, Latino businesses and now Latino farmers and ranchers, many who are former farmworkers.

MAFO promotes social justice through building assets and advocacy through a holistic approach. Our primary focus is to help people enhance their current skills, develop new skills, acquire access to community resources, build assets such as personal wealth and thereby creating strong, healthy and productive families. We attempt to break down the isolation and loneliness that often festers in people who travel to harvest America and survive with limited resources. As this transient community relocates within rural America, we partner with community organizations and city government to facilitate and create welcoming climate to new communities. Our members and partnering organizations offer skills building, teaching of homeownership classes and assist in acquisition and creation of new small business ownership.

If you have any questions about MAFO and/or sponsorship opportunities, please do not hesitate to call me at 320.251.1711 or via e-mail at lalo.zavala@umos.org. Look for further announcement about the Conference plans and logistics. Thank you for your consideration.

Please forward this request to other who may be interested.

AFGHANISTAN - ATTACK ON FEMALE POLITICIAN HIGHLIGHTS
GROWING RISK FOR AFGHAN WOMEN IN PUBLIC LIFE

The shooting of a female Afghan politician on Monday demonstrates the fragility of the modest gains made by Afghan women after the fall of the Taleban, Amnesty International said on Thursday.

Nida Khyani, a female Provincial Council member, was left in critical condition after being attacked in a drive-by shooting in Pul-e-Khumri, the provincial capital of Baghlan in northern Afghanistan.

"Nida Khyani is yet another casualty of the systematic violent targeting of women in public life in Afghanistan," said Sam Zarifi, Director of Amnesty International's Asia Pacific programme.

"The Afghan government and the international troops supporting it have failed to adequately protect women working in public office and as human rights defenders," said Sam Zarifi. "The ability of Afghan women to be active outside their homes should be a key benchmark for the effectiveness of the Afghan government and NATO troops, and in this regard, the record is quite poor."

AUSTRALIA - VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN A CONTINUING PROBLEM - STUDY

Australia still has a long way to go to abolish violence against women, a new survey reveals.
One in four people think women falsify or exaggerate claims of rape and domestic violence, according to the federally funded survey of more than 10,000 Australians.
And one in five think domestic violence is excusable if the attacker regrets what they have done.
Despite this, 98 per cent or respondents recognise domestic violence is a crime, up from 93 per cent in a similar 1995 survey.
VicHealth, which compiled the results, says despite the wide range of conflicting views, Australian attitudes are changing for the better.
In the 1995 survey one in seven respondents said women who were raped had asked for it, compared to one in 20 in the latest survey.
VicHealth CEO Todd Harper says efforts to improve the safety of women and change community attitudes have begun to pay off.
"However, the sheer numbers of women affected by violence, mostly committed by the men with whom they share their lives, remain horrific," he said in a statement.
"So we must do everything we can to challenge the kind of attitudes, behaviours and practices that allow violence against women to flourish."
Minister for the Status of Women Tanya Plibersek told ABC Radio there were many areas "where we (federal government) need to do a lot of work with the community to really improve attitudes towards violence against women".
Men and younger people were more likely to tolerate domestic assaults on women, the survey showed.
And it predicted that one in three women would be assaulted in their lifetime.

A Decade On, No Seats for Women at the Peace Table
By Marguerite A. Suozzi

Only 19 out of 192 member states have developed national action plans to implement 1325, noted Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury of Bangladesh.

UNITED NATIONS, Apr 23, 2010 (IPS) - It was a historic moment for the United Nations when, 10 years ago, the Security Council unanimously recognised "the intrinsic role of women in global peace and security" through Resolution 1325, said Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury of Bangladesh at a panel at the U.N. Thursday on the continuing obstacles to its implementation.

"The resolution was primarily based on a simple thesis that the equal access and full participation of women in all layers of power structures, as well as their full participation in prevention and resolution of conflicts were essential elements for making and sustaining peace," explained Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen, the permanent representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, and the moderator of the panel, cosponsored by Bangladesh, Canada and Sweden.

But efforts to implement 1325 and other "sister resolutions" as Ambassador Henri-Paul Normandin, the deputy permanent representative of Canada, described them, have been largely stymied for the past decade.

Chowdhury, also a former U.N. under-secretary-general, cited the fact that only 19 out of 192 member states have developed national action plans to implement 1325, as one reason for the stalled progress. He also expressed deep regret about the number of reports of sexual abuse by U.N. peacekeepers.

"It's a shame that even peacekeepers are engaged in these kinds of things," he said, criticising the lack of accountability in bringing those accused of sexual abuse to justice, particularly those deployed by the U.N.

"During the last three years from 2007 to 2009, 450 cases of abuse [by peacekeepers] have been reported, and would you believe, only 29 have been acted on," said Chowdhury.
