Feminists on the Frontline: Case Studies of Resisting and Challenging Fundamentalisms

This collection of case studies is a testament to the women and men around the world who have stood up to reject the imposition of norms and values in the name of religion as well as to expose and challenge the privileged position given to religion in public policies. In 2008 AWID launched a call for proposals to document the strategies of women's rights activists confronting religious fundamentalisms. The final 18 case studies presented here are drawn from a wide range of religious and geographical contexts, and cover various fields of activism. We hope that this collection will inspire, inform and encourage discussion and debate. Please visit this page again for updates, as finalized case studies and a brief summary of each case study will be posted on a rolling basis. We will also soon be posting a paper that introduces the trends and themes that are threaded through the various case studies.

Protecting Women Human Rights Defenders in Meso-America Region

The Meeting of Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) in the Meso-American Region was held from April 23-25, 2010 in Oaxaca, Mexico. Participants discussed strategies to protect WHRDs in the various contexts of their activism. AWID spoke with Marusia López Cruz,* one of the meeting organizers, about the event.
By Gabriela De Cicco

AWID: What was the goal of the meeting, and what issues did it address?

Marusia López Cruz: The organizations that organized the meeting (Consorcio Oaxaca, AWID, Just Associates (JASS), UDEFEGUA and Alianza Centroamericana) are concerned about the increasingly frequent attacks and other human rights violations that WHRDs in the region face. In Meso-America, there is little recognition of their contributions and the risks they face.

We realized that we needed to analyze the situation of WHRDs in the region and identify protection measures, especially where these activists challenge patriarchal norms and practices (including within their own movements) and are consequently attacked by non-governmental actors. We also wanted to increase, on a region-wide scale, our capacity for timely responses to the crises WHRDs face, and to find ways to enhance their security in the context of the adverse and repressive conditions in which they work and live.

Study finds link in abuse, abortion

BY KATE FOWLER

Abortion-seeking women are more likely to have experienced partner violence than the general population, according to a recent study by University of Iowa professors and Planned Parenthood of the Heartland.

The study, published in the American Journal of Public Health, was based on a series of private screenings of 986 women seeking abortions at Planned Parenthood on issues of physical and sexual abuse, as well as battering. Researchers completed the study over a period of 81⁄2 months; all the participants were Iowa residents.

Researchers found nearly 14 percent of the women who sought abortions had experienced domestic violence from a partner in the previous 12 months. And 74 percent of those women said they had been abused by a former partner rather than their current partner.

Anne Wallis, a co-author and a UI assistant professor of epidemiology, said this is a meaningful discovery — from one of the largest samples of women from an abortion clinic ever studied.

“There is a myth in our society that abused women are at fault and don’t leave their relationships,” Wallis said. “Our research shows that this myth isn’t true and that a lot of women do leave abusive relationships.”

Soccer Educational Outreach Program to Stop Domestic Violence
Posted on June 20, 2010 by Bridget Crawford

I've watched more ESPN in the last week than I have in the last year. I've caught FIFA World Cup fever, along with millions of other sports fans around the world.

I was interested to learn that there is a "Young Leaders Summit" taking place in Johannesburg at the same time as the World Cup. 200 young people are attending this summit, sponsored by Man Up, a global youth campaign to stop violence against women and girls. Here's how Man Up describes "the issues" (source):

Efforts to Address Gender-Based Violence: A Look at Foundation Funding

Newly Released Report - Download [pdf]: Efforts to Address Gender-Based Violence: A Look at Foundation Funding

Foundations play a critical role in supporting efforts to address gender-based violence, yet little research has been conducted on the level or type of funding in the U.S. Spurred by the paucity of data and analysis, the Ms. Foundation for Women undertook a multi-pronged study to measure the scope, focus and impact of funding in this area.

A CRUSHING LOVE - Movie
Chicanas, Motherhood and Activism
A film by Sylvia Morales

2009, 58 minutes, Color, DVD
Order No. W10977

A CRUSHING LOVE, Sylvia Morales’ sequel to her groundbreaking history of Chicana women, CHICANA (1979), honors the achievements of five activist Latinas—labor organizer/farm worker leader Dolores Huerta, author/educator Elizabeth “Betita” Martinez, writer/playwright/educator Cherrie Moraga, civil rights advocate Alicia Escalante, and historian/writer Martha Cotera—and considers how these single mothers managed to be parents and effect broad-based social change at the same time.

Questions about reconciling competing demands are ones that highly acclaimed filmmaker Sylvia Morales, a working mother of two herself, pondered aloud as she prepared this documentary. Historical footage and recent interviews with each woman reveal their contributions to key struggles for Latino empowerment and other major movements of our time. Both they and their grown children thoughtfully explore the challenges, adaptations, rewards, and missteps involved in juggling dual roles. Scenes of Morales at work and at home, often humorously overlaid with her teenage daughter’s commentary, bring the dilemma up to date. Chicana continues to be used in classrooms more than thirty years after it was made; A CRUSHING LOVE is a memorable sequel which offers us indelible portraits of unforgettable women, including one of Morales herself.
