MEXICO CITY, Jun 17, 2010 (IPS) - By 5:00 AM, dozens of women are already lined up outside of this clinic in the Mexican capital. Most come with their mothers, sisters, husbands, friends or boyfriends. A few show up alone.

Sitting on the sidewalk, the women and the people accompanying them try to catch a few winks, in spite of the cold, before dawn breaks and numbers are handed out to the lucky ones. Only the first 30 will be seen today. The rest will have to come back another day.

There are 15 public hospitals in the federal district of the capital that offer safe, legal abortions, but the Beatriz Velasco Reproductive Health Clinic has carried out one-quarter of such procedures since first trimester abortion was legalised by the Mexico City legislature in April 2007.

Delhi High Court rules on Reproductive Rights Violations - Ground breaking judgment

In a ground breaking judgment postively impacting the Reproductive Rights of millions of women in India, Justice Muralidhar, Delhi High Court sought accountability for India's shamefully high levels of maternal deaths and maternal morbidity, ironically on International Women's Day. Hearing two cases of Reproductive Rights violations, advocated by the Human Rights Law Network - Laxmi Mandal v NCT Delhi & Ors W.P. (c) 8853/2008, the victim Shanti Devi, a scheduled caste woman, living below the poverty line, was denied her reproductive rights and tragically lost her life minutes after she gave birth to a premature newborn; and in Jatuin v MCD Maternity Home MCD & Ors 10700/2009 involving a poor, homeless, young woman, after being denied emergency obstetric care was forced to publicly deliver her newborn child under a tree, minutes from India gate.

''The broad issues in these petitions are concerned with the reproductive rights of health as well as the rights of the newly born free treatment and care in government medical facilities essentially on the ground that they are persons below the poverty line. From what has transpired in these cases thus far it is plain that there are some schemes formulated by both the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi ('GNCTD') as well as the Central Government to address the issues. However, there appear to be no operation guidelines issued that can actually facilitate the accessing of free medical care by expectant mothers and the newly born babies, belonging to the below the poverty line category.

Prostitution and Trafficking
Prostitution and Trafficking Sex Traffic Rises, Along With Scramble for Solutions
By Rich Daly

New U.S. statistics on rising sex traffic came out this week ahead of a congressional vote on a related bill. The question of criminalizing prostitution continues to complicate matters for an apparent groundswell of activism.

WASHINGTON (WOMENSENEWS)--"Do not buy women or children for sex and don't support those who do!"

That's the World Cup cheer of the South African chapter of the New York-based Coalition Against the Trafficking of Women, which is circulating a petition with that message addressed to South African President Jacob Zuma.

It's the kind of message that in other years would have been lost in the media din of a major international sporting event.

But this year major media outlets such as ESPN News are devoting special coverage to the problem of sex trafficking at the big soccer match and Hollywood celebrities are lending their voices to the anti-trafficking cause.

Their Dangerous Swagger
By MAUREEN DOWD

It was set up like a fantasy football league draft. The height, weight and performance statistics of the draftees were offered to decide who would make the cut and who would emerge as the No. 1 pick.

But the players in this predatory game were not famous N.F.L. stars. They were unwitting girls about to start high school.

State choking laws signal new attention to domestic violence
By John Gramlich, Stateline Staff Writer

With his wife, Claire, at his side, John Cantin testifies before the New Hampshire Senate Judiciary Committee on March 30 in favor of a bill making choking a felony. Cantin’s daughter, Melissa Cantin Charbonneau, was shot and killed by her husband last October, two days after he was released from police custody on a misdemeanor charge of choking her.

When Lara Saffo, a county prosecutor in western New Hampshire, tried to win a felony assault conviction against a man accused of domestic violence last year, she had a more difficult task on her hands than she recognized at the time.
Saffo had obtained evidence allegedly showing that the man had attacked his wife and put his hands around her neck in an attempt to choke her. Under the wording of New Hampshire’s assault law, however, she needed to convince a jury that he had displayed “extreme indifference to the value of human life.”

Using that standard, the jury came back divided — even though Saffo believes jurors had no doubt that the defendant was trying to choke his wife. The felony charge collapsed, even as three lesser misdemeanor charges stuck.

A Global Petition is currently circulating calling on Amnesty
International to revert back to its core mandate which is maintaining an
objective distance from groups and ideas whose agenda is most certainly
not human rights but imposing autocratic control and domination over
certain groups. Not forgetting of course that women far from being a
'specialist group or 'minority' form half the world's population.

Herstory has shown time and again that male-centered struggles involving
men's power and control over other groups always marginalise and
sideline Women's Rights and issues. Time and again it is always women
who suffer the most, because Human Rights supposedly only mean
male-centered ones.

Ms. Sahgal said this in respect of Women's Human Rights when giving a
telephone interview in March, 2010.

"It tells you a lot about where women's rights stand at Amnesty
International, when they had to make the choice between Begg and their
most senior discrimination expert who also has researched
fundamentalism, they chose Begg."

Domestic violence registry launched in California

Four California counties are rolling out a new software system that will eventually link domestic violence records across the entire state.
Marin, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara and Orange counties are taking part in a pilot program that will provide a searchable database of scanned restraining orders. Marin last week became the first county to begin using the system.
The state judiciary ordered the creation of the California Courts Protective Order Registry to help judges create protective orders that are consistent across county lines.
The registry will also track elder abuse, harassment, workplace violence and juvenile cases.
Court administrators plan to include 20 counties in the system by the end of the year and all 58 California counties by 2013.

Ella, Week After Birth Control Pill: A Boon for European Women, But Will It Make It to America?

The FDA is studying a new morning-after pill, commonly known as Ella, for approval in the United States. Ella is short for EllaOne, the brand name of the pill in Europe. It is effective for preventing pregnancy up to 120 hours following unprotected sex and was approved for use in 44 countries in early 2009. Though it is still a new drug and needs further study, I am hoping for rapid approval for prescription use. Why? Because the number one predictor of a woman's status worldwide is whether or not she has dominion over her fertility.

Africa Rising
The Grassroots Movement to End Female Genital Mutilation
A film by Paula Heredia, Produced by Equality Now

Kenya/Mali/Somalia/Tanzania, 2009, 62 minutes, Color, DVD, English/French/Somali/Swahili
Order No. W09980

Every day, 6,000 girls from the Horn of Africa to sub-Saharan nations are subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM). With fierce determination and deep love for their communities, brave African activists are leading a formidable, fearless grassroots movement to end 5,000 years of FGM. An insightful look at the frontlines of a quiet revolution taking the continent by storm, this extraordinarily powerful film is one of the first to focus on African solutions to FGM.

Beautifully directed by Emmy Award® winner Paula Heredia and produced by Equality Now, AFRICA RISING travels through remote villages in Burkina Faso, Kenya, Mali, Somalia and Tanzania. Weaving together dynamic footage and the poignant stories of girls personally affected by FGM, it shows how African women and men are putting an end to this human rights violation. Convincing circumcisers to lay down their knives, engaging the police to implement the law, and honing leadership skills in girls, these determined activists have been working tirelessly for years to conceptualize their campaign. AFRICA RISING paints an intimate portrait of the broadly-based but little-known anti-FGM movement and shows that courageous, creative and resourceful individuals can change the course of history.
