Take action on the Trafficking Deterrence and Victims Support Act

Each year, at least 100,000 children fall victim to sex trafficking within the U.S., and 200,000 to 300,000 are at risk of being commercially sexually exploited. Domestic victims of sex trafficking, including children, are severely overlooked in most state approaches to fight human trafficking.

S. 2925 by Senator Ron Wyden (OR) and H.R. 5575 by Representative Carolyn Maloney (NY-14) provides crucial funding to develop and enhance comprehensive, collaborative efforts to combat the sex trafficking, especially of children, in the U.S. by providing six block grants of $2,500,000 each to state or local government entities who have designed a holistic approach to investigating, prosecuting and deterring sex trafficking, and providing special services and shelter to the victims. We need this legislation!

Talking Points to include in your email:

- An estimated 100,000 children are exploited through prostitution every year in America.
- The average age a child is first prostituted is 13.
- Many more children are at-risk for exploitation through prostitution, pornography and sexually explicit entertainment, such as stripping.
- When these children become adults, many remain in exploitive, abusive and coercive situations in the commercial sex industry.
- Please don't forget to thank your Senator!

Forsaken Lives:The Harmful Impact of the Philippine Criminal Abortion Ban

The Philippines is one of the few countries in the world to criminalize abortion in all circumstances with no clear exceptions.

As a consequence, women in the Philippines continue to die or suffer grave complications from unsafe abortion procedures, producing a massive and unnecessary public health crisis and violating the fundamental human rights of Filipino women.

Despite the criminal ban, in 2008 alone, an estimated 560,000 induced abortions took place in the Philippines; 90,000 women sought treatment for complications and 1,000 women died.

These tragic and preventable deaths are a direct consequence of the nation's restrictive abortion law and an indirect consequence of the lack of adequate information about and access to effective modern contraceptives in the Philippines.

The Report

The purpose of this report is to examine and expose human rights violations resulting from the imposition of a criminal prohibition on abortion in the Philippines. The information is based on the experiences of women who have undergone unsafe abortion procedures and survived to tell their stories. This report is intended to serve as a starting point for a dialogue on government accountability for the human suffering caused by the criminal ban on abortion and the challenges it creates for health service providers.

An International Organ of the OAS Finds that US Deportation Policy Violates Human Rights of Children and Families

An Urgent Need for Immigration Reform in the United States

08-04-10

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, an autonomous organ of the Organization of American States, made public on August 02, 2010, its groundbreaking decision in the case Wayne Smith and Hugo Armendariz et al, v. United States. The Commission found that U.S. deportation policy violates fundamental human rights because it fails to consider evidence concerning the adverse impact of the destruction of families, the best interest of the children of deportees, and other humanitarian concerns.
