B.C. polygamist leaders charged in case that will test ban on multiple marriage
By James Keller,
THE CANADIAN PRESS

VANCOUVER, B.C. - After decades of controversy and allegations, RCMP swept into the polygamous community of Bountiful, B.C., on Wednesday and arrested two sect leaders, including one who had bragged of multiple wives and dozens of children and all but dared police to stop him. Winston Blackmore and James Oler - leaders of separate, divided factions in the community of about 1,000 people - were each charged with a single count of practising polygamy.

Blackmore is accused of having 20 wives and Oler two, and police say some of their wives were as young as 15 years old when they were married.

The arrest brought a dramatic end to almost 20 years of investigations and scrutiny, and the start of a criminal case that will test the limits of Canada's prohibition of polygamy.

"We've always felt that there has been exploitation," Attorney General Wally Oppal said Wednesday at a news conference in Vancouver.

"The question is whether under our laws we were in a position to proceed, and we have concluded that we are."

Blackmore and Oler were released from custody in Cranbrook, B.C. on Wednesday under a number of conditions

Bangladesh: The Root Causes Of Acid Burnings
From IRIN:

Acid attacks against women and girls are continuing despite legal campaigns to halt their spread.

Over 2,600 cases have been reported since 1999, according to the Acid Survivors Foundation of Bangladesh (ASF). Almost all the attacks have been on women or girls. Many of the victims are under 18, says ASF, which has been working to eliminate acid violence for almost a decade.

I am a freelance journalist. Currently, I am working on a story about a family court judge in Santa Barbara, California. There have been 3 cases so far in which the judge displayed a tendency to "accomodate" friends in the decisions that he made. In one case, a man lost his home in an illegal eviction proceeding. I would like to speak to any women who have had documented problems with family courts in California.

* I am particularly interested in stories from Santa Barbara and/or Orange County. All information will be held in confidence.

Five Part Series on Sexual Assault on Incarcerated Women

Sexual assaults on female inmates went unheeded
BY JEFF SEIDEL • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER •

First of five parts

For years, rights groups warned that male guards were sexually assaulting female inmates in Michigan prisons. For years, those warnings went unheeded. Now, state taxpayers may pay a price too. More than 500 women are suing. They stand to collect $50 million so far, with more trials to come. This is their story

Dear Feminist Activist,

Please take a moment to help defend the safety and work of Iran's Nobel Laureate human rights lawyer Dr. Shirin Ebadi. Dr. Ebadi, a defender of women's rights, has had her human rights organization forcibly closed by the Iranian authorities. In the latest of a series of serious incidents, an angry mob surrounded Dr. Ebadi's home and personal office chanting death threats against her and vandalizing her building. Last week, authorities raided Dr. Ebadi's personal office and seized her writings, confidential legal files, and two computers amid claims of so-called tax evasion.

In August 2006, we and human rights organizations throughout the world asked you and other people of conscience to write the Iranian government, which at that time was threatening to arrest Ebadi and close the center. The Iranian authorities responded and the center remained open. We are asking you to help again.

Please join feminists and human rights activists worldwide to support Shirin Ebadi and her important work as a leading human and women's rights defender!

I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Ebadi in 2006 when the Feminist Majority Foundation presented her with the Eleanor Roosevelt Global Women's Rights Award. Her bravery, leadership, and determination is unforgettable. Time and time again she has risked her life for women and children. We cannot let her down.

Dr. Ebadi's human rights advocacy is so important it should not and must not be silenced. Write to urge
Iran's swift reversal of these actions against Shirin Ebadi and permit the reopening of her human rights organization. http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/140 0/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=26386

For Equality,

Eleanor Smeal

P.S. Act Now to support Dr. Ebadi! She must not be silenced and time may be running out.

Press Release

Human Trafficking in the Bay Area

January 11th is National Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery Awareness Day

Human Trafficking is modern‐day slavery. The victims are among the most vulnerable members of society. It is estimated that 70% of trafficked victims are women and children who are forced into hard labor and sexual slavery. The US Government estimates that 700,000 to 2 million women and children are trafficked across borders each year to be used as illegal labor or sex workers.

California is the top destination for human traffickers according to a report released by the state’s anti‐human trafficking task force. According to task force members, the problem goes far beyond the sex trade and extends to migrant farm and construction workers, household employees, and workers in motels and restaurants.

The report’s findings, along with acknowledgements by Sonoma County Officials, convincingly show that Human Trafficking is present in our communities here in the North Bay!

On Sunday January 11th, 2009, Soroptimist International clubs in Sonoma, Marin, and Mendocino counties are bringing awareness of this issue to citizens and agencies in the North Bay. This event will be a continuation of a coordinated movement toward prevention of Human Trafficking.

The PBS Documentary “Sex Slaves” will be featured followed by a panel discussion with law enforcement agencies and local organizations who are currently fighting the battle against Human Trafficking.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Monique Lessan, a state licensed Private Investigator, owner of Eye Investigate, specializing in recovery of abducted children and runaways.

Taliban Announces New Education Bans on Women and Girls
Pamphlets distributed by the Taliban in Pakistani tribal areas bordering Afghanistan yesterday impose a ban on co-educational schooling in the region. According to the Times of India, all co-educational schools in the region must close by Monday. During the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, which lasted until 2001, Afghan girls were forbidden to attend school.

In December, regional Taliban leader Mullah Shah Doran announced an education ban that impacts women and girls in a northern part of Pakistan known as the Swat Valley. The directive set a deadline of January 15 for all girls, both in single-sex and co-educational schools, to be withdrawn. The Taliban reportedly threatens to bomb schools that ignore this directive and to severely punish violators. Teacher Mohamed Osman told the Times of India that "we have no choice but to follow the orders. The government cannot give us protection. Taliban runs a parallel government in 90 per cent of the area of the district and they execute everyone who opposes them."

Enrollment of women and girls in schools and colleges in the Swat Valley region is only a quarter of what it was only three years ago, before the Taliban gained strength there, according to the Washington Times. In the past year, more than 130 schools, many of which were all girl institutions, have been destroyed in the area.

Exciting Urgent News: House Vote on Ledbetter and PaycheckFairness Acts This Week!
Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2009

Dear Feminist Activist,

We have just learned the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act will be the first votes of the new House. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act passed the House in the last Congress, but Republicans filibustered the bill and prevented a vote in the Senate. Ledbetter corrects the Supreme Court decision that gutted the ability of women workers to sue for wage discrimination.

The Paycheck Fairness Act also passed the House in the last Congress, but was never sent to the Senate floor. This Act would deter wage discrimination by closing loopholes in the Equal Pay Act and by barring retaliation against workers who disclose their wages.

Let's start the new Congress off with a vote for women's rights. Tell your Representative to vote yes for women's wages. Employed women need your Representative's yes vote on these critical bills!

For Equality,

Eleanor Smeal
President, Feminist Majority

P.S. Act now, this is our moment: we will have the Senate vote too and President Obama has pledged to sign both bills

21st Century Strategies for Inspiring Men and Boys to be Allies in Gender Violence Prevention

Join us for a teleconference
Thursday, January 15, 2009
12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time
REGISTER NOW

No charge for members, $25 for non-members

Leading the discussion:

Jackson Katz, ED.M., one of America’s leading anti-sexist male activists. An editor, author and filmmaker, he is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in the field of gender violence prevention education with men and boys.

Katz introduces participants to a creative new way of conceptualizing the role of men in what historically have been considered "women's issues." Instead of seeing sexual and domestic violence as women’s issues that some “good guys” help out with, he argues that they are men’s issues, about which all men should be educated and active – especially men in positions of family, community, professional and political leadership.

This informative and highly interactive training will cover a number of topics. These include but are not limited to the need to rethink language used to talk about violence; dynamics of male peer culture that keep many men silent in the face of their peers' abusive behavior; the relationship between homophobia and sexism; the role of media in shaping gendered behavior; issues of racial and ethnic diversity; and the role of adult male leadership.

Who should attend?

This comprehensive and innovative learning experience is for attorneys • social workers • therapists • DV service providers and advocates • children's advocates • child protection workers • child abuse service providers • professional and scholars who work on intimate partner violence, child abuse, child custody, or family law policy • physicians • nurses • physician assistants • nursing and medical students • practicing healthcare providers • school personnel • family court evaluators.

Co-sponsored by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world with 152,000 members and 56 chapters in the United States and abroad. One CE contact hour is available for social workers for $10; instructions will be given on the call.

Non-members are welcome to participate for a $25 fee per teleconference. If you join the Alliance, your membership fee will cover the cost of Alliance teleconferences for the rest of the year.

Phone lines are limited – please register early. While JWI pays the bridge fee for the call, all participants are responsible for their individual long distance charges.

The Evil Behind the Smiles

Nicholas D. Kristof/The New York Times

Western men who visit red-light districts in poor countries often find themselves surrounded by coquettish teenage girls laughingly tugging them toward the brothels. The men assume that the girls are there voluntarily, and in some cases they are right.

But anyone inclined to take the girls’ smiles at face value should talk to Sina Vann, who was once one of those smiling girls.

Sina is Vietnamese but was kidnapped at the age of 13 and taken to Cambodia, where she was drugged. She said she woke up naked and bloody on a bed with a white man — she doesn’t know his nationality — who had purchased her virginity.

After that, she was locked on the upper floors of a nice hotel and offered to Western men and wealthy Cambodians. She said she was beaten ferociously to force her to smile and act seductive.

“My first phrase in Khmer,” the Cambodian language, “was, ‘I want to sleep with you,’ ” she said. “My first phrase in English was” — well, it’s unprintable.

Lap dancing clubs among job centre advertisers

By Eddie Barnes
Political Editor
WOMEN are being asked to prostitute themselves after applying for vacancies in job centres, the Government has admitted.

Job centres across the UK are routinely advertising for escort agencies, lap dancing clubs, massage parlours and TV sex channels, according to a new report released by the Department for Work and Pensions.

The Government has now revealed that applicants getting such jobs have complained after being asked to perform "sexual services" for clients.

Women's groups last night said the revelations were effective proof that job centres were providing a path into prostitution for out-of-work customers.

All job centres across the UK have been forced to advertise adult entertainment posts since 2003 after the High Court ruled that a previous ban was discriminatory.

But ministers are now considering whether to place new restrictions on the practice to ensure the Government is not inadvertently providing a "pimping" role in the huge prostitution industry.
